Contact: Robert Caldwell Malik for U.S. Congress (504)301-8210 Is TP coverage of Malik Rahim Inaccurate, Biased?
Is the Times-Picayune sending out distorted information about US House of Representatives Candidate Malik Rahim? If so, WHY? In the Michelle Krupa's November 6 article (Jefferson Base Shows It's Loyalty) the paper describes the opponents to Bill Jefferson as "little-known". However, Malik Rahim is by far the best known challenger.
After Hurricane Katrina Malik Rahim founded Common Ground, an organization that opened the first health clinic in the city of New Orleans, gutted over 2,000 homes and gave service to over 200,000 returning networks and programs. residents of this city. This work has made him internationally known. A recent winner of the acclaimed Thomas Merton Award, Malik Rahim has been featured on 60 minutes, the BBC, the Washington Post, Democracy Now!, PBS, ABC, and other Moreover, the Picayune recently reported that Cao raised $58,900 from individuals and corporations, plus $7,000 from national Republican groups. However, the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/cancomsrs/?_08+H8LA02112 reports that Cao ONLY raised a total of $39,681 from individuals. While the remainder of his $110,281 in total receipts was from LOANS.
By contrast the Picayune under estimated the Rahim budget. Stating that "Rahim reported collecting nearly $2000 from individuals and corporate donors…" when in fact, the FEC report clearly shows Rahim collected more than $7,985 in individual contributions. http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/cancomsrs/?_08+H8LA02120 What more Malik Rahim campaign's does not even accept corporate contributions, and to date has raised well over $25,000 dollars.
So, did the Picayune, knowingly distort the truth? If so, then WHY? In this era of political CHANGE who could be better for New Orleans in the Obama Era than Malik Rahim? Could it be that Rahim IS "the RIGHT man, for the RIGHT job, at the RIGHT time and the Picayune just can not see it?" # # # Derrick Murray dwolemurrayife@yahoo.com
