Lynch Law U.S.A.: State Defends Murderer of Trayvon Martin
Internationalist Group
2012-03-29 3:02 AM Outrage over the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin compounds daily as the killer remains free, facing no criminal charges for gunning down the unarmed black youth from Miami Gardens, Florida. On February 26, George Zimmerman, a white self-appointed captain of a "neighborhood watch" team in a gated community in the Orlando suburb of Sanford, shot Martin, a black high-school student, who was returning to the home in the development where he and his father were staying. Police and local prosecutors never charged Zimmerman and accepted his cynical claim that he shot the unarmed youth in "self-defense." Thousands have demonstrated around the country, particularly after police tapes of 911 calls by Zimmerman were released, showing that he was stalking Martin. But the main thrust of liberals is to divert the protests into a movement for gun control laws and to get rid of "Stand Your Ground" laws such as Florida's which make it legal to shoot in self-defense. The ruling-class response deliberately tries to obscure the key fact that this was racist murder. Trayvon Martin was killed for the "crime" of "walking while black." (text/html + 1 comment)

The Perils of Looking 'Suspicious' While Black and Interpreting While White
Nola Anarcha
2012-03-25 9:30 PM Sometime around 5:30 a.m., on March 1, 2012, an off-duty policeman working for a private neighborhood security force stopped two young black men driving in a predominantly white neighborhood in New Orleans. The officer called for back up. The incident tragically ended in the shooting death of Justin Sipp, the 20-year-old passenger of the car, who was African-American, as well as non-fatal injuries to two of the officers and to Justin's brother Earl who was the driver of the car. 2012-03-24 4:28 PM Election seasons bring up subjects often not discussed when no election's happening – especially presidential elections. Part of the interest in watching presidential campaigns for many is hearing about issues that are not only important to us, but to others. It's interesting to hear the rationale or logic behind other's support or opposition to issues of concern to them. (text/html)

A letter to Katha Pollitt of The Nation Magazine
Tom Tepid
2012-03-22 2:02 AM In February 6, 2012 The Nation Magazine’s Katha Pollitt published: “Ron Paul, Take Two” for her column piece in which she bemoaned with exasperated mysticism: “…Basically, I’m bewildered by progressives who embrace Paul.” The Nation has compromised so much to the Democratic Party—and especially the Obama White House—you really don’t stand for anything much progressing. If anyone is “bewildered” about who supports who it is us who witness you people continue to back such a “seeming” betrayer as Barack Obama.

Mid-City Police Shootings: An Inevitable Result of the Apartheid Police State
Nola Anarcha
2012-03-10 12:42 AM Early this morning, the police murdered another young black man in our community. His relatives say he and his brother who was also shot, were good young men. Both worked at Mid-City Burger King restaurants. Two police officers were also shot, presumably by the men they'd pulled over in a "proactive" traffic stop, i.e.- driving while black. This comes as no surprise, and is an inevitable result of the apartheid police state we live in. (text/html)

BP Settlement Sells Out Gulf Ecosystem and Residents
Obama Betrays Gulf for Profit
2012-03-08 1:04 AM President Obama's settlement with BP for 7.8 billion does not cover the costs of ecosystem clean-up and the losses sustained by the fishing industries of the region. The people of the Gulf depend upon a healthy fishery as do the pelicans and other birds that comsume fish. Covering the Gulf in oil because the emergency safety valve wasn't installed is a serious error that needs to be made an example of. BP was let off easy by the U.S. government in the interests of protecting corporate oil profits. (text/plain)
