Who Will Save Social Security and Medicare?
Shamus Cooke
2013-04-10 5:45 AM Before Social Security and Medicare existed, the elderly were either completely dependent on their children or were left to beg in the streets. These programs thus remain sacred to the vast majority of Americans. They allow the elderly dignity and independence instead of poverty and insecurity.

On the death of president Chavez/No hero/No dictator
Astrid Essed
2013-04-05 1:32 AM
The late Venezuelan president Chavez deserves appreciation for his
social ''Bolivarian'' programs and his anti imperialist engagement.
However, reprehensible sides of his reign are the repression in Venezuela and the oppression of the freedom of expression.
His friendly relationships with dictators like Assad, Lushenko and Kaddafi are disgustable.
Therefore he doesn't deserve the unconditional praise he gets from his leftist admirors. (text/plain)

A Curious New York Times Article on Teacher Evaluations
Ann Robertson and Bill Leumer
2013-04-03 3:30 PM A recent New York Times article, “Curious Grade For Teachers: Nearly All Pass,” finds incredulous the idea that, “In Florida, 97 percent of teachers were deemed effective or highly effective in the most recent evaluations.” The author goes on to cite similar percentages in other states and concludes: “The teachers might be rated all above average, like students in Lake Wobegon, for the same reason that the older evaluation methods were considered lacking.” In other words, the teachers score well because the measuring standard is flawed. And this conclusion is reinforced by the observation that teachers’ high marks were achieved “even when students were falling behind.” (text/plain)
How Obama Chose War Over Peace in Syria
Shamus Cooke
2013-03-30 7:59 AM With Syria on the brink of national genocide, outside nations have only two options: help reverse the catastrophe or plunge this torn nation deeper into the abyss. Countries can either work towards a peaceful political solution or they can continue to pour money, guns, and fighters into the country to ensure a steady gushing into the bloodbath. (text/plain)

2013-03-24 4:51 AM

This month, Woodfox's conviction was overturned by US District Court Judge James Brady. In response Amnesty International has launched an online action campaign urging Louisiana Attorney General James Caldwell not to appeal this ruling to the Fifth Circuit Court. (image/jpeg)

Obama’s Still Shopping for a Grand Bargain
Shamus Cooke
2013-03-21 8:01 AM President Obama’s recent closed-door sessions with Republican congressmen to reach a “grand bargain” has roused suspiciously little attention in the mainstream media. What scant reporting has occurred presents the following narrative: President Obama is a “middle ground” politician attempting to breach political divides with erstwhile Republican opponents. In reality these meetings are not between political opposites, but kindred spirits; perfectly matched ideologies that differ only in implementation, and only by degrees. (text/plain + 1 comment)

Chavez Succeeded Where Obama Failed
Shamus Cooke
2013-03-13 5:16 AM When President Obama campaigned in 2008 in Portland, Oregon over 70,000 people came to hear his speech. And although I missed the event, I was intrigued by the raw emotion that the candidate’s words inspired in my community. Obama re-visited Oregon during his 2012 campaign, but the inspiration had faded from his voice, and the audience had drastically changed. The Oregonian explains: (text/plain)

Amnesty International Launches New Online Campaign for Albert Woodfox of the Angola 3
International Coalition to Free the Angola 3
2013-03-12 12:24 AM
Today Amnesty International launched an online campaign asking Louisiana Attorney General James Caldwell to not appeal the District Court's ruling to either release or retry Albert Woodfox, declaring: "After decades of injustice, let the Angola 3 ruling stand!" Please support Albert by taking action, and helping to spread the word. Now is a critical time in the fight for Albert's freedom. We want Caldwell's office to be inundated with emails so he hears it loud and clear that the cycle of injustice and cruelty must end. (image/jpeg)
