The Lower 9th Ward: The struggle continues
Diane Krauthamer
2006-01-21 12:53 PM Sitting right along side the Industrial Canal, the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans was the hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina and Rita, due mostly to a levee that broke. In light of hardships that thousands of residents have gone through since September, the city is now telling them that they cannot go back to their homes. Residents say such a political battle is the last thing they need, as they're struggling to reclaim their homes and their lives. (text/plain)
Heart of Darkness: Common Ground Relief in the Lower Ninth Ward
Brian Denzer
2006-01-21 10:02 AM The Lower Ninth Ward is the heart of darkness -- the most-devastated neighborhood in New Orleans. But is the true heart of darkness found in the power center of a society that continues to deny residents of the Lower Ninth Ward, and the rest of the Gulf Coast, the hope of returning to rebuild their homes and their lives? This 1/09/2006 interview with organizer Brandon Darby explores the efforts undertaken by Common Ground volunteers to provide relief to Lower Ninth Ward residents, and to help them gut and rehab their homes. A Soldier For Truth Has Fallen: In Memory of Specialist Doug Barber
Jay Shaft
2006-01-18 9:17 PM Today I come to you with a heavy and troubled heart. I have the unfortunate task of giving you some very tragic news. Yesterday afternoon Specialist Douglas Barber, an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, took his own life after struggling with the demons and nightmares of PTSD for over two years.
No one really knows what caused his sudden and deadly breakdown. Doug had been on the phone laughing and kidding around with one of his best friends about an hour before the incident. Several friends have said that Doug seemed to be in an upbeat and playful mood throughout the morning, and that he never mentioned any problems.

Bush says spying legal, Legal Scholars say he’s lying again
ben frank
2006-01-13 12:16 PM
Just because Bush says his domestic spying program is legal and justified does not make it so. While the Constitutional scholars didn’t say, “he’s lying”, they did say that his program is “blatantly unlawful” - which is basically calling him a liar, diplomatically.
... that Mr. Bush’s warrantless domestic wiretapping program is legal, as contended by his lawyers - simply cannot be taken seriously. (image/png)
