Alternative Social Forum
2006-02-07 4:52 PM * In Caracas, Venezuela between the 23rd and 29th of January 2006, 10 local socio-political organizations offered an alternative forum and critique of national politics in response to the World Social Forum. The result was a smaller-scale event but self-directed and reflective of current self-organizing capacity. Muslim-Bashing and the Power of Cartoons
William Hughes
2006-02-04 11:35 PM
Back in the late 19th century, the political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, in NYC’s “Harper’s Weekly,” viciously attacked Catholics, the Irish and the Vatican. He crossed the line with those caricatures. The same can be said about the Danish authors of the 12 cartoons vilifying the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the revered founder of Islam. The demonizing was, in effect, an attack on all of the Muslim faithful. The parties responsible should offer an apology. (image/jpeg)

Latest Bout of Censorship at LSU
Walter McClatchey
2006-02-03 11:26 PM Friends:
I'm outraged at the latest example of censorship at LSU. Senior Collins Phillips now faces expulsion because of his
criticism of the University. Phillips led the protests last semester against
the purple and gold Confederate flag. He recently held a rally on campus that
resulted in reprisal from the University. See today's Baton Rouge Advocate story here:

The 9/11 Key to Political Transformation
W. David Kubiak
2006-02-03 12:15 AM
-- A belated strategic initiative to turn the world around
Given the momentum and added troop strength of the corporate forces now in power, citizens will face unending appeals this year to help combat firestorms on many different fronts.
Already we are struggling to prioritize our efforts to stop war atrocities, torturers' appointments, escalating Pentagon appropriations, horrific new weapons, the resurrection of Star Wars, and the imminent draft, not to mention environmental assaults, our ballooning debt, attacks on our rights, the slashing of the social safety net, and a dozen other centrifugal symptoms of the sickness at the top. Cindy Sheehan: “Bush’s Presidency Is Illegitimate!”
William Hughes
2006-01-31 12:04 PM
Cindy Sheehan is back in Washington, D.C. She appeared at a Forum, on Jan. 30, 2006, proposing the impeachment of both President George W. Bush and his vice-president-in-mayhem, Dick Cheney. Sheehan believes Bush’s election in 2000, by the Supreme Court was illegitimate and that his abrogating to himself Congress’s war making powers to invade Iraq was unconstitutional. Congress won’t do anything, Sheehan said, “unless we make them” do it. (image/jpeg)
