Hey, General Assembly of MD: ”Reverse Deregulation!”
William Hughes
2006-03-26 11:16 PM
Most Marylanders can expect their electric bills to go up by $743 a year-a 74 % increase! In 1999, the legislature deregulated the industry. In a sweetheart deal, BGE was absorbed by Constellation Energy and required to begin buying its electricity on the open market. Meanwhile, BGE’s electric-generating assets, originally paid for by the people, were turned over to Constellation in “a cash-free shuffle.” The ratepayers are now being asked to pay again! No More Homeless Katrina Survivors!
Soleil
2006-03-26 9:30 PM On Wednesday, March 29th the survivors of Katrina will be put through another agonizing lottery of possible homelessness. FEMA is continuing its anxiety provoking practice of announcing a cut-off for the Short Term Lodging program, and then watching as Katrina survivors beg for extensions until their Transitional Housing is available. Hundreds of families are denied extensions and forced out with each deadline; many seek shelter in houses that are not yet safe, or in their cars on the street. (text/plain)

Global Nonviolent Resistance Marks Third Anniversary
Danny Målec
2006-03-21 12:33 PM Marking the third anniversary of the U.S. occupation of Iraq, thousands of activists from all parts of the globe engaged in nonviolent demonstrations and direct action focusing on disrupting business as usual at some of the symbolic “Pillars of the War in Iraq” – US government installations, military bases, congressional offices, recruitment centers and war profiteers. Actions took place in cities around the world, including Atlanta, Belfast, Boston, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Madrid, Managua, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Rome, San Francisco, San Salvador and Washington, DC. These actions demonstrate increasing boldness to challenge the mechanisms of the war in Iraq through coordinated, global nonviolent resistance. (text/plain + 1 comment)

William Hughes

Activists marched on the Pentagon, on March 20, 2006. In a direct action, a symbolic coffin was hoisted over a fence by the protesters at the facility, located in northern Virginia, just opposite Washington, D.C. About 20 demonstrators were arrested. The “Iraq Pledge of Resistance” organization sponsored the event on the third anniversary of the bloodbath in Iraq. A prayer was also offered near the Pentagon to honor all of the Iraqi dead. Support Indigenous Rights: Sign the Free Grassy Narrows Petition
Rainforest Action Network
2006-03-20 6:30 PM In Ontario, Canada, an indigenous community called the Grassy Narrows First Nation are being subjected to human rights abuses. Logging companies, Weyerhaeuser and Abitibi are clear-cut logging their land without the community’s consent. This exploitation is poisoning their waters with toxins, robbing the community of economic opportunities, and destroying their way of life.

MLK School clean up begins in Lower 9th
cycle
2006-03-18 7:53 PM
In an historic act of solidarity, around 85 students and organizers from across the country joined community members and risked arrest today by entering Martin Luther King Elementary School in the devastated Lower 9th Ward. Outside the school, a crowd of around 300 gathered wearing Tyvek suits and respirators, holding hand painted signs and chanting to oncoming traffic. In an ongoing effort to rebuild New Orleans, residents of the Lower Ninth Ward requested that these supporters clean the school out. (image/jpeg)
