2007-03-13 11:33 PM The U.S. House of Representatives is considering legislation that would compell HUD to reopen at least some of the city's public housing units that have been shuttered since Katrina. Supporters of the right of return need to understand just what this legislation would mean to the fight for affordable housing in New Orleans. (text/plain)

Official Statement of Friends of Kevin!

2007-03-13 1:31 AM THE CASE SO FAR
In July 2005, 12-year-old Joseph "Bam Bam" Long collapsed on the floor of his house in Kirkwood (St. Louis County). Police, slow to respond to his family's 911 calls, finally arrived, and then, neglecting to even check his pulse, simply stood around waiting for an ambulance while Bam Bam lay face down. Upon arrival, paramedics pronounced him dead. Hours later, one of those cops, Sgt. William McEntee, lay dead in a pool of his own blood several blocks from Bam Bam's house. Authorities swarmed the Meacham Park neighborhood kicking in doors and terrorizing residents. Days later, desperate to blame someone, police arrested Bam Bam's older brother, Kevin Johnson. In the lead up to Kevin's March 26th (2007) trial, the state has been going to great lengths to portray Kevin as a monster- accusing him, his family, and his friends of interfering with witnesses. The state and its courts have made their intentions clear: they plan to execute Kevin. What should be abundantly clear by now, though, is it's not Kevin who's the monster. The state is the real monster. (text/plain)

Scripted Libby Trial Ends on Cue: What Can Happen Next?
William Hughes
2007-03-08 3:30 PM
The Prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, crafted the “Scooter” Libby case to protect the Bush-Cheney Gang. Even the members of Libby’s jury knew something was missing. Now, it’s time for the House’s Judiciary Committee to pick up the baton. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NEV) said Libby manipulated “intelligence” to get us into the war and that the case revealed “deeper truths” about VP Dick Cheney. I say: “Bring Cheney to the Bar of Justice!” (image/jpeg)

The Sacco and Vanzetti Case Revisited
William Hughes
2007-03-07 2:56 PM
On August 23, 1927, the State of Massachusetts executed two-Italian born immigrants for their alleged roles in the murders and robbery of a payroll clerk and his security guard on April 15, 1920. The condemned, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were militant anarchists. A mockery of a fair trial led to their ultimate fate. Professor Deborah Contrada revisits their case and concludes that there was “reasonable doubt, easily” as to their guilt. (image/jpeg)
