Unstable Foundations
Rebecca Solnit
2007-03-21 10:11 PM New Orleans represents what Republicans promise when they call for shrinking down government. Residents struggling to remain in the stricken city or
return home find little assistance - but rather, great resistance - from government at all levels. Still, the author sees hope among people who "are
doing it for themselves" with assistance from thousands of volunteers from all across the nation. Katrina, writes the author, "is not even half over."

Gary Tyler's Quest for Justice
DAVE ZIRIN
2007-03-21 5:50 PM The history of the American legal system is scarred with instances of injustice: the Haymarket martyrs, Sacco and Vanzetti, the Scottsboro Boys, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Add to this list the case of Gary Tyler, convicted of murder at the age of 16. Tyler's case was remarkable because at the time of his 1975 conviction, he was the nation's youngest death-row inmate. The spotlight dimmed when his sentence was commuted to life without the possibility of parole in 1977, a year after the US Supreme Court declared Louisiana's death penalty unconstitutional. pleasure of the president
J. America
2007-03-20 6:35 PM US Attorneys don't serve "the pleasure of the president", they
serve freedom lovers dedicated to defending America from
willful criminality. But, americans are too stupidly weak to
demand Coast to Coast hosts allow open communications on
America's highest of concerns. Bushite america would rather,
in silence, thieve from God as our Humanity, than serve the
protections of Justice as ourselves. (text/plain)
Schwarzenegger Betrays Students on Tuitions
Stewart A. Alexander
2007-03-20 5:43 PM Advocate groups for free education consider the recent tuition hikes for UC and CSU students to be no less than a tax on college students. California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has done nothing to make education affordable for students since he was elected in 2003. In the past the governor’s office has made it clear that education is a right for K-12, but not for higher education.

Is Iran Next? What can the average person do to stop a new war with Iran?
Jenny Anderson
2007-03-17 5:13 PM
Marches, petitions, calls, and faxes to congress are important channels for political action, but what could possibly stop a new war with Iran? One has to wonder, are our congressional leaders even reading their faxes? A notable website called www.isirannext.org recently published over 80 names and organizations of people whom directly influence policy and the president. Maybe through side channels, average Americans can get their message through.

Gasoline: More Pain At The Pumps
Stewart A. Alexander
2007-03-16 6:44 PM Within the past five months, since November 2006, the average driver is paying an additional $42 per month for gasoline and more than $100 per household. Families are finding it difficult to meet household expenses and are cutting back on weekend activities and vacation plans. Christian Roselund
2007-03-16 12:08 AM Seven thousand workers from 13 unions entered their second week of strike at the Ingalls shipyards in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The workers walked out on March 8th after voting overwhelmingly to reject Northrop Grumman's new contract, which they say increases insurance premiums without an offset in pay or an allowance for the rising cost of living post-Katrina. The following audio and pictures are from the picket outside Northrop Grumman, taken on March 14th. (audio/mpeg)

2007-03-14 9:54 AM Until all of us recognize that we will never be able to live lives free from the fear of violence until we see ourselves as one interwoven, unseperateable community that cannot be a great place to live until their is not desperate, hopeless people living among us, we will always have these problems. We need to demand politicians do whatever is necessary to relieve the despair, hopelessness, and desperation so many in our city grow up to have inside them, to raise the poor and uneducated up so we can ALL have a safe place to call home, because there is no other alternative if true safety is our goal.
