Ruling Against Mumia Shows: No Justice in the Capitalist Courts
Internationalist Group
2008-03-31 1:10 AM On March 27, the U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia reaffirmed the frame-up conviction of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the former Black Panther Party spokesman and world-renowned radical journalist who has been locked up on Pennsylvania’s death row for more than a quarter century. After previously rejecting Mumia’s request to present evidence of his innocence, as well as a host of issues showing that he was railroaded by a racist court, the Court turned down Mumia’s request for a new trial. It upheld the 2001 ruling by a federal district judge that ordered a new hearing on the sentence, but limited the “choice” to the living hell of life imprisonment without parole ... or execution. Mumia is innocent. He was declared guilty and sentenced to die because of his revolutionary politics and because for years he had been a thorn in the side of the racist rulers of the misnamed “city of brotherly love.” Around the world, millions have come out in defense of Jamal. This latest ruling, like all those that preceded it, shows that the exploited and oppressed must have no faith in the racist injustice system. We call on the workers movement to mobilize its power to free Mumia now! (text/html)

2008-03-29 7:07 PM
In February, HUD released the findings of the University of Texas research on the intentions of residents of public housing in New Orleans (attached). While HUD’s press release and the Times Picayune headline focused on the relatively small number of residents who wanted to live in the units they occupied before the storm, the most important news in the report is how many displaced residents could not be found to interview. Voices of the Innocent: a documentary play from exonerated people
recorded by matt olson
2008-03-26 6:55 AM This is the story of four men who spent time on death row and who, after protesting their innocence and making legal injunctions and appeals to that end, were exonerated. All four discuss the process of being arrested, sentenced by a jury often not of their peers, the psychology of time in jail and on death row and having to adjust back to "the outside" for a crime they never committed. police equate civil disobediance at lafitte development with terrorism
mike howells
2008-03-26 2:06 AM Supporters of the right of return and public housing staged a Good Friday protest action at the Lafitte Housing development that ended with three participants being arrested. The three conducted a simple occupation of an apartment at the development scheduled for demolition.. Upon arrest the three were charged with violating a state anti-terrorist law passed in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. The felony charge against the Lafitte Three, if effect, equates civil disobediance with terrorism. Friends of democratic rights are urged to join in the effort to stop the railroading of the Lafitte Three. (text/plain + 1 comment)
PARAGUAY.
Boston-area convicts linked to CIA nexus
theamericanmonitor
2008-03-23 5:41 AM During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the CIA used al-Kifah to support covert operations overseas. With the full backing of the U.S. government, the organization set up branches in more than thirty American cities to raise funds and recruit fighters for the CIA’s anti-Soviet Afghan jihad. In the early 90s, once again with U.S. support and encouragement, al-Kifah shifted its focus to the Balkans, helping to instigate a civil war in Bosnia in 1992. This case, like so many others, proves the government’s so-called “war on terror” is really a chase for its own tail. As long as the truth is buried and the media remains silent, the hopeless pursuit will continue. (text/plain)

Does The HUD Survey Of Public Housing Residents Really Reflect What They Feel
mike howells
2008-03-22 3:18 AM Supporters of the demolition of New Orleans public housing point to the results of the recent HUD commissioned UTA survey as proof that residents support the demolition of their pre-Katrina homes. However, existing research and recent history suggest that the respondents to the UTA survey were anything but likely to posit answers that contradicted official HUD policy. This brief article examines factors likely to discourage HANO residents from putting forward positions on a HUD sponsored survey that expressed for returning to homes scheduled for demolition.
