Closing Guantanamo—Why it’s Symbolically, Spiritually and Materially Important.
Scott Skein
2013-05-05 8:57 PM President Barack Obama has made a clear and convincing case for closing Guantanamo! Mostly the same reasons finally articulate were just as true when he initially took office. Closing the stigma of war, crime and national shame has always been a high agenda item for many Americans. It is now the watermark battle ground that could begin to show who or what really runs this country. But think of the mindless excuses from war hawks (including complicity by the mainstream media) to try to stop any transparency about Guantanamo prisoners. But there is simply no way President Obama can close this base on his own without major and active U.S. citizen and world support. How can Congress possibly stand in the way of the reasons President Obama announced for closing the Bush Legacy? Where is the Free Speech movement, where are the campus protests at Madison and Kent State Ohio?

New Orleans May Day reportback
anon
2013-05-05 7:46 PM On the night of May 1 a crew of approximately 20 hooligans visited HRI Properties CEO Pres Kabacoff and his phony voodoo priestess wife Sallie Ann Glassman at their home in the Bywater neighborhood to deliver them their long overdue welcome to downtown. Our house-warming gift—a dumpster’s worth of the filthiest trash we could find—was silently carted in using several shopping carts taken from the Wal-Mart that sits where the St. Thomas Projects used to be. Adam Richmond

White People Don't Keep Their Promises and Jewish People Are Stingy
Sudhama Ranganathan
2013-04-30 4:15 PM Stereotypes are like … well elbows, all of us have lists in our own psyche's put there by social forces, before we had an opportunity to mature enough as people to question them. We know the typical ones. The entertainment industry helps perpetuate them with regards to minorities – at least here in America. Black people and Latinos being dangerous criminals are probably the most widely spread stereotypes, still perpetuated today. However, the idea women need men, are weaker than men and need to stand by their man no matter what because they are not able to make it without them, is probably in constant competition for that unenvious top slot. Obama and U.S. Military Divided Over Syria
Shamus Cooke
2013-04-30 2:49 AM Has Syria crossed the “red line” that warrants a U.S. military invasion? Has it not? The political establishment in the United States seems at odds over itself. Obama’s government cannot speak with one voice on the issue, and the U.S. media is likewise spewing from both sides of its mouth in an attempt to reconcile U.S. foreign policy with that most stubborn of annoyances, truth. Mark Vorpahl
2013-04-19 11:39 AM On April 11 over 400 people packed the third public Portland Budget Hearing, which was organized by the City of Portland and which left many spilling out beyond the room where the hearing took place. More importantly, for the City Council there was an unexpected critical outpouring from the vast majority who attended. For the first time, the City Council and Mayor Charlie Hales began to lose control over their attempts to sell austerity. (text/html)

The Same Ones That Got Us Here
Sudhama Ranganathan
2013-04-10 4:48 PM All hail the people that got us to the point we are now. All hail the folks elected to represent us in this nation's political system, that managed things so well our nation is functioning just fine and on all cylinders. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be doing as well as we are currently, and that's great. We can feel the love all around us like a shimmering wave of excellence. It's as though perfection itself were being exuded from the compassionate and selfless halls of Congress. Ahh what a society we've become. (text/html)
Argentina Payment Plan Would Protect Poor Hedge Fund Holdout - NML Capital - has Until Apr
Jennifer Tong
2013-04-10 4:03 PM The long 2nd Circuit Court saga between Argentina and hedge funds commonly referred to as “vulture funds,” will likely come to an end soon. Judges in the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals gave holdout funds until April 22, 2013 to respond to Argentina’s payment plan. In late March, Argentina outlined a payment plan that would give holdout creditors virtually the same deal that 93 percent of creditors took in 2005 and 2010 debt swaps. (text/plain)

Shamus Cooke
2013-04-10 5:45 AM Before Social Security and Medicare existed, the elderly were either completely dependent on their children or were left to beg in the streets. On the death of president Chavez/No hero/No dictator
Astrid Essed
2013-04-05 1:32 AM
The late Venezuelan president Chavez deserves appreciation for his
social ''Bolivarian'' programs and his anti imperialist engagement.
However, reprehensible sides of his reign are the repression in Venezuela and the oppression of the freedom of expression.
His friendly relationships with dictators like Assad, Lushenko and Kaddafi are disgustable.
Therefore he doesn't deserve the unconditional praise he gets from his leftist admirors. (text/plain)

A Curious New York Times Article on Teacher Evaluations
Ann Robertson and Bill Leumer
2013-04-03 3:30 PM A recent New York Times article, “Curious Grade For Teachers: Nearly All Pass,” finds incredulous the idea that, “In Florida, 97 percent of teachers were deemed effective or highly effective in the most recent evaluations.” The author goes on to cite similar percentages in other states and concludes: “The teachers might be rated all above average, like students in Lake Wobegon, for the same reason that the older evaluation methods were considered lacking.” In other words, the teachers score well because the measuring standard is flawed. And this conclusion is reinforced by the observation that teachers’ high marks were achieved “even when students were falling behind.” (text/plain)
