Sneak peek at a desert Armageddon
Asia Times
2008-01-04 2:47 AM ...a veritable industry was built around parsing the literal fallout if deterrence should fail. Indeed, it was Herman Kahn, who founded the Hudson Institute, who in 1965 wrote the book On Escalation, which included an escalation ladder, whose final and 44th step was "spasm or insensate war". In a somewhat similar spirit, a recently released briefing has been making waves. The briefing is turning heads because it was written by Anthony Cordesman, who was a former director of intelligence assessment in the US Secretary of Defense office. He also holds the Arleigh A Burke chair in strategy at CSIS and has done numerous assessments of the Persian Gulf and the Middle East. (text/plain)

Not Getting It About New Orleans
a
2007-12-30 6:57 AM It comes as no surprise when a major U.S. newspaper backs real estate developers over the rights and interests of the poor they have a long track record of doing so, while the poor are lectured in patronizing language to emulate the people the papers celebrate. This week the New Orleans Times-Picayune has an article on their website titled "Protests ignore realities." This article is a response to the struggle local residents have been waging against the planned demolition of their homes--protests which made national headlines this week. The "realities" these people supposedly ignore is that the government and wealthy real estate developers know what's best for them. (text/plain + 1 comment)

Provocative Thoughts While Touring a Park:
Sam Staples
2007-12-27 7:07 PM From book subtitled: The Authoritarian Nature of the Three Abrahamic Religions: as When God Became the Terrorist: The major thesis of this book is that authoritarianism, as a “human” personality trait, throughout history, has influenced both the “creation” and the “interpretation”, of religious and political dogma, and that this was even more so before there was a constituted division between Church and State. In Judeo-Christianity and Islamic authority, to some extent, is the egotistic imprint of monotheism in which God basically is perceived to have a “psychological” ego consciousness able to understand and communicate with the human ego consciousness of mankind. Particularly, we will want to focus on the ideas of justice—both the ideas of divine metaphysical justice and human social justice. According to Daniel Defoe, in no trivial sense, “Justice is the end of government”. (text/plain)

US Officials See Waste in Billions Sent to Pakistan
spiegel.de
2007-12-26 4:43 PM The US has poured billions into Pakistan's struggle against Al Qaeda and the Taliban. But some American officials are now saying that Washington got too little for its money. And that much of the funding may have been misappropriated. Dov Zakheim, who served as the Pentagon's top financial officer until 2004 and helped set up the program in late 2001, said in a telephone interview that while he was at the department, the military carefully checked whether Pakistan carried out the operations it claimed and typically approved only 80 to 90 percent of each invoice.
