Tata Noah chief of Indigenous communities
Juan Esteban Yupanqui Villalobos
2011-03-17 1:39 PM
My grandfather walked with a very long stick adorned with many allegories. Tata Noah told me long ago that it represented our true nation, which was all unknown, because many of those living in the village had given in to the viciousness of the white people and did not follow the customs of our fathers. That hurt my Tata, so when I arrived, he ever and ever told me many things and stories of our nation... (image/jpeg)

Mayor’s group made jail decision based on bad info from Sheriff
repost of Matt Davis, The Lens staff writer
2011-02-23 3:26 AM
Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman appears to have misled the public about the ownership of a key property that is part of his planned jail complex.
Gusman told a jail working group convened by Mayor Mitch Landrieu that the city owned the property. But his office has owned it since 1992, according to public records.
The distinction is important because the sheriff’s ownership of the land places him in a more powerful negotiating position with city officials over the new jail. The block is in a strategically important position. (image/jpeg)

Much to the jubilation of the throngs of demonstrators in Egypt Hosni Mubarak has announced his resignation, handing his powers to the army. The strongman who just a few hours before wanted to be the defender of the constitution and the ultimate bulwark against the “chaos”, has thus ratified a kind of cold coup d'Etat . (image/jpeg)

An article from December 2010 published in USA Today the Programme for International Student Assessment scores showed, just as in many years previous, that American students are far below the top scoring nations in the world academically. In the rankings America is, out of 34 nations, listed as “14th in reading, 17th in science and 25th in math.” (http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2010-12-07-us-students-international-ranking_N.htm) It was not always this way. There was a time American students ranked consistently towards the tops of those lists. Though times change, what changes can tell us a lot about the times in which we live and those we may be headed towards. (image/jpeg)

A powerful wave of anger among the poor and unemployed Arab masses shakes the young, voracious and brutal capitalism of the North African and Middle Eastern countries supported by the old and bloody capitalism in Europe and America. Matt Olson

On what feels like the coldest day of the year in New Orleans, members of the Congress of Day Laborers and their supporters held a 24 hour vigil in front of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office to press for their right to remain in the area.
A lawsuit, Cacho v. Gusman, has been filed by a member of the Congress against Marlin Gusman, Orleans Parish Sheriff, whose governance of the prison has resulted in blatant racial profiling and constitutional violations, alleges the lawsuit.
More to come. (image/jpeg)

Bradley Manning and GI Resistance to US War Crimes --An interview with Dahr Jamail
Angola 3 News

When someone becomes a soldier, they swear an oath to support and defend the US constitution by following “lawful” orders. Thus, they are legally obliged by their own oath to not follow unlawful orders. What Bradley Manning did by leaking this critical information has been to uphold his oath as a soldier in the most patriotic way. Now, compare that with how he has been raked over the coals by most of the mainstream media. (image/png)

We would not have had to interrupt Netanyahu if the world listened to Palestinian voices
Emily Ratner (repost)
2010-11-19 4:26 PM
There's no getting around it: What we -- five young Jewish people -- did during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech was shockingly rude. We interrupted a head of state, repeatedly, shouting from the tops of chairs into a darkened hall of largely like-minded people, who most likely thought their space was safe from these ever-increasing disruptions.
It shouldn't take this kind of action to draw attention to these crimes. The media should have cared this much about the dozens of Palestinians who marched outside the GA the day before Netanyahu arrived. Palestinian voices should be heard, respected, and reflected in all coverage of Palestine. The myriad examples of Palestinian nonviolence should be better known than those far fewer examples of violence that dominate Israel's security narrative. And Israel's violence should be known fully, and properly contextualized. Most of all, Palestinians should guide us in understanding how best to address the atrocities perpetrated against them.
