LOSING A FREE-SCHOOL LEGACY IN NE0-COLONIAL ORLEANS
M.B.Black & Jose Torres Tama
2006-08-06 3:34 PM
(intro-M. Black/essay-Jose Torres Tama) After a year of brazen wheelin’-n-’dealin’ by Government, Corporate and non-Profiteers, New Orleans harbors a grief that continues to compound and reverberate through the soul of this fragile metropolis. With the majority of the city’s former housing still uninhabitable, triple rents and increased utilities on what is left, and the drastic reduction or outright elimination of public services, including hospitals, schools, public housing, legal services for the poor & public transportation, New Orleans runs the risk of becoming an architectural minstral to one of the richest treasures of the United States’ own culturally complex cities.
>>>>As those of us here fight for a place called home and to redefine community in shadowy abscenses of the once familiar, commonplace, and beloved, the fact is, the majority of residents simply cannot return. And in these abscences, a litany of loss continues to flood the city beneath the shiny devolopment plans of Ivy League urban planning experts and their corporate development counterparts. These losses are losses to the entire country - We are losing the opportunity to celebrate and see in our complex and conflicted pasts examples of freedom, compassion and resistence that could guide us into a future in which tolerance and courage are celebrated instead of fear and conformity. Now it looks like condos are on the way in the property of the Catholic Archdiocese of Louisiana that was, until last month, home to Bishop Perry Middle School, one of the oldest schools for children of color in the entire country, founded by a free woman of color of African descent.
>>>>The following commentary is reprinted with permission by long-time resident of the New Orleans cultural resistence, the shamanistic street performer, revolutionary artist and committed educator Jose Torres-Tama. Kevin Zeese Challenges Rep. Cardin on Israel
William Hughes
2006-08-04 12:14 PM
Kevin Zeese, an Independent candidate for U.S. Senate from Maryland, is shaking up the Establishment. Despite the “unmatched power” the Israel Lobby exerts over our foreign policy, Zeese is challenging Rep. Ben Cardin to speak out about Israel’s “terror military policy” in Occupied Gaza and Lebanon. Cardin, who is also running for the U.S. Senate in MD, submitted a two sentence reply to Zeese. The people of Maryland deserve better! (image/jpeg)

Mayor Martin O’Malley Pimps for Israel Lobby
William Hughes
2006-07-30 11:54 AM
U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) is a politician that regularly sucks up to the powerful Israel Lobby. Fortunately, she has an opponent in this year’s primary, Jonathan Tasini, who is calling her on her shameless behavior. In Baltimore, Mayor Martin O’Malley, who wants to be governor of Maryland, is following in Clinton’s footsteps. When the Israel Lobby called a rally, on 07/25/06, to boost support for Israel, O’Malley showed up to do its bidding. (image/jpeg)

William Hughes

On July 25, 2006, a spirited rally was held in front of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. The protesters demanded an end to Israel’s murderous attacks on Lebanon and Gaza. The rally was preceded by a march through the neighborhood, which included the protesters carrying 50 coffins draped in black. The coffins symbolized the innocent Lebanese and Palestinians, who have been slaughtered in the latest war crimes committed by Zionist Israel. (image/jpeg)

Public Housing Press Conference - 7-17 at the Lafitte
Darwin BondGraham
2006-07-18 10:53 AM
Gathered on the steps of one apartment just feet away from the busy N. Claiborne Avenue thoroughfare in the city’s Treme neighborhood, the crowd spoke about the city’s dire need for affordable housing as well as their personal plights since Katrina hit. But few of the residents seemed to lay blame on the storm. Instead they pointed toward the city and the housing authority, and wealthy developers who they say want the valuable land that the Lafitte sits upon. (image/gif)

The Rev. Billy Graham is No Phil Berrigan!
William Hughes
2006-07-13 11:23 AM
The Rev. Billy Graham was in Baltimore recently doing his religious revival thing. For years, he was a crony of warmongering presidents, like Richard M. Nixon. Rev. Graham’s preaching never attracted me. However, the life work of the late Phil Berrigan, an ex-Josephite priest, had a profound influence on me, and others. Berrigan spoke the truth to power. He relentlessly took on the War Party and spent 11 of his 79 years in prison for his protest actions. (image/jpeg)

Officials Announce $4.2 billion Grant to Property Owners in Louisiana
Darwin BondGraham
2006-07-11 11:13 PM
By providing up to $150,000 to homeowners the program is likely to benefit the middle and upper classes while ignoring the needs of the state’s renters. The grants will effectively help more affluent citizens to recoup some of the equity they lost when their homes and rental properties were damaged, but it will do nothing to build wealth and allow for some degree of empowerment for the state’s poorest citizens, many of whom are concentrated in the New Orleans metro region. What If Israel Had Never Been Created?
William Hughes
2006-07-11 12:20 PM
What would the world look like, if in 1948, the state of Israel hadn’t been created? Unfortunately, President Harry S. Truman, under the “influence of the Zionists,” gave his endorsement to that violence-inspiring project. Since that time, life for the Palestinans has become a hell-on-earth under the heel of Israel’s brutal Death-Mayhem-&-Occupation Machine. John Lennon said, “Imagine there’s no countries.” Okay, let’s imagine: There is no Israel! (image/jpeg)
Earth First! blockades Virginia coal plant
EF!
2006-07-10 2:09 PM
Early this morning, activists with Earth First! and Rising Tide North America set up a non-violent blockade of American Electric Power's (AEP) nearly 50 year old Clinch River coal fired electric facility. Emitting millions of pounds of pollutants yearly, the Clinch River coal plant threatens the health and lives of thousands of downwind residents and the surrounding environment. Burning coal is not only a primary factor behind global climate change, but also drives the expansion of large scale strip mining. Large scale surface mining destroys forests, streams and communities as it alters the Appalachian landscape forever. (image/jpeg)
The Ancient Redwoods: Witnesses to a Fading Republic
William Hughes
2006-07-06 9:38 PM
The Ancient Redwoods are older by centuries than the American Republic itself. They are found only in the northwest coastal region of the nation. They have witnessed this country’s birth struggle, its awful Civil War, its rapacious expansion westward, and now, finally, its imperial hubris and rapid decline. By the time the Bush-Cheney Gang gets done ripping the country off (aided by complicit Democrats), the Republic will be a fading memory. (image/jpeg)
