Volunteerism Will Not Rebuild the Gulf Coast--Building A Political Movement Can
Mike Howells and Jay Arena
2009-07-22 2:08 AM
'Self-Help' Volunteerism is part of the problem, not the solution to rebuilding the Gulf. What we need are volunteers in the tradition of the civil rights movement, who come to support, to engage the social movements battling for-profit and non-profit corporations that are profiting from the disaster. Big Oil too big for Arnold's "shared sacrifice"
Anonymous
2009-07-16 5:14 PM
Arnold Schwarzenegger calls for "shared sacrifice" in California State budget cuts. But who is he willing to sacrifice? Children who will go without health care, young pregnant women who will not receive counseling, working moms, students depending on state sponsored college scholarships, and people with disabilities, Alzheimer's, mental illness, and HIV/AIDS. And who is to too big to sacrifice? Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Conoco-Pillips, and BP. The Governor and California Republicans adamantly insist that the oil and natural gas companies will pay no severance tax for the privilege of extracting oil and natural gas that belongs to Californians, even as the State goes $25 million deeper into high interest debt every day. Obama, Ghana, and African oil
Ann Garrison
2009-07-12 1:33 AM
Barack Obama's visit to Ghana is, most fundamentally, about West African oil and natural gas, and control of the corridors for transporting it through the Gulf of Guinea, on the West African Coast. Nigeria, the greatest source of African oil for export, is at the center of the African oil producing states bordering the Gulf, and the Niger River is the corridor for transporting Nigerian oil and gas, and now, oil and gas from landlocked Niger, as well. Anarchism, Violence, and Brandon Darby's Politics of Moral Certitude
MJ Essex
2009-06-26 4:59 AM
In post-Katrina New Orleans, anarchist truths found fertile, if toxic grounds to take root and grow. New paths were walked on. Antiauthoritarian principles emerged as important guides for both reconstruction and the struggle against disaster capitalism. A million or more equally important stories can now be told about mutual aid, cooperation, subversion of authority, disruption of state and capitalist plans. And yet Brandon Darby's morality tale has become a media darling, due in no small part to his perfect and full adoption of his role as a state agent, regardless of whether it was official in 2006, or whether the FBI is still cutting him paychecks. We owe it to ourselves to tell these other stories of New Orleans, St. Paul and beyond. (image/jpeg + 10 comments)

Who's In GNOBEDD With LSU?
A. Caritas
2009-06-17 2:13 PM
Major investors have created enormous economic and political pressures on LSU to build its $1.2 billion hospital in lower Mid-City

Casual observers might think that the pro-Charity vs. LSU teaching hospital conflict is an argument over two competing plans to bring health care back online in New Orleans. It is not. The difference between the two camps is in fact much more fundamental with the pro-Charity coalition valuing health as a human right versus LSU and its supporters valuing health care as a business anchor around which an industry can grow, land values can inflate, and hospitals can make money. No set of facts better illustrates this divide and fleshes out the LSU camp's motivations than the machinations of major real estate developers in Mid-City. In spite of the post-Katrina rise in mortality and morbidity rates —due to the local health care system's bedraggled state— LSU and its allies have stubbornly refused to entertain the notion of reopening Charity, favoring their economic development centered plans over what pro-Charity advocates define as an issue of the human right to medical care.

Into this conflict numerous journalists have intervened with facts and analysis. We (“A. Caritas” is a pen name for several researchers) reported in December about real estate acquisitions of several developers in and around lower Mid-City, questioning the for-profit motivations driving the LSU-VA project. New information about these developers and biotech boosters has compelled us to chime in again, especially in response to Times Picayune reporter Kate Moran's glowing profile of one Mid-City developer published in April. School closures loom, as California donates its oil and gas to the cash rich oil industry
Anonymous
2009-06-11 5:26 PM
California is the only state in the U.S. that donates its oil and natural gas reserves to the private oil and gas industry, untaxed. Were it a nation, it would be the only nation in the world to do so. And it has continued to, even as schools close and the State of California threatens to close its doors. (image/jpeg)

War correspondent and investigator Jeremy Scahill
on Bill Maher's late night "Real Report."
President and Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama has the Constitutional and military executive authority to end the U.S. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan at any time. As Commander-in-Chief, he is first in command of the entire U.S. Armed Forces and could order them all home. Any U.S. military personnel who disobeyed would be subject to court martial, according to military law. The only possible defense would be that Commander-in-Chief Obama had ordered them to commit a war crime. (image/jpeg)

The coal industry made Barack Obama the star of its $20 million advertising campaign as the American Clean Energy Policy Act of 2009 was being drafted, and RFK, Jr., called Obama an "indentured servant to the coal industry."
