USA: Human Rights Activist to be Jailed
Steven Argue
2012-08-03 8:44 PM
The case of Ed Frey is reminiscent of an earlier Santa Cruz case where Sandy Loranger did time in jail for feeding the homeless soup. When the judge offered her counseling instead of jail Sandy Loranger replied, "If feeding my fellow man is a crime, I am beyond rehabilitation."

STOP Imperialist War against Syria
Jose Maria Sison
2012-08-03 6:35 AM
We, the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), condermn in the strongest terms the duplicitous scheme of the US and NATO in instigating, funding and arming the so-called Syrian National Council and Free Syrian Army to seek the violent overthrow of the Assad government in Syria and at the same time pushing a “peace plan” and then a “transitional government” under the auspices of the UN in order to politically outmanuever the Assad government and the anti-imperialist and democratic forces.

The Next Stage in the Destruction of Syria
Shamus Cooke
2012-07-30 12:57 PM The U.S. media has made its intentions clear: the 'rebels' attacking Syria's government must have more support to advance Syria's "revolution.” This was the result of the much-hyped advance of Syria's rebels into the country’s two largest cities, which the western media portrayed as a defining moment in global democracy. But "journalists" like these have blood on their hands, with much more in the works. (text/plain)

Taxing the Rich and Its “Left” Critics
Ann Robertson and Bill Leumer
2012-07-29 2:49 AM In a recent article published on the website of Socialist Viewpoint, Chris Kinder criticized those on the left who call for raising taxes on the rich. Identifying himself as a Trotskyist, Mr. Kinder displayed particular displeasure with Trotskyists who embrace this demand. Yet, as we will argue, his arguments fundamentally deviate from the political-strategic framework established by Marx and Engels and developed by Lenin and Trotsky. (text/plain)

Houston Janitors Strike for Economic Justice
Mark Vorpahl
2012-07-27 1:44 PM Echoing the story of David vs. Goliath, janitors in Houston are on strike and taking on such corporate giants as JPMorganChase and Exxon Mobile in an effort to pressure the janitorial companies they employ to agree to the workers' modest demands. It is these big business behemoths that are the real powers behind cleaning contractors such as ABM, GCA, ISS etc. By striking against these contractors, and publicly targeting these contractors' employers, the janitors are using their collective power in a showdown that has great significance for not only the Labor Movement but all workers. ALARMING NEW DRUG CRAZE DEMANDS BETTER EDUCATION
Paola Martinez
2012-07-26 2:51 AM The story of the “Miami cannibal” Rudy Eugene–the 31-year old Miami man who devoured most of a homeless man’s face last Memorial Day weekend–garnered much attention in the press, including the charge that he had been consuming “bath salts” – the recent designer drug popular on the street and legally sold in Florida under various names. Climate Change and the Next U.S. Revolution
Shamus Cooke
2012-07-24 2:04 PM The U.S. heat wave is slowly shaking the foundations of American politics. It may take years for the deep rumble to evolve into an above ground, institution-shattering earthquake, but U.S. society has changed for good. (text/plain)
Pensions Under Attack
Mark Vorpahl
2012-07-19 12:54 AM On Friday, July 6, President Obama signed into law a bill that would renew transportation programs and extend low interest rates on student loans for one year. While this minimal gesture resulted in, no doubt, sighs of relief from those burdened by student debt, tucked away within the bill's pages was a little-noticed proposal to further erode the funding of workers' pensions. The bill was a brilliant sleight of hand where what it appeared to be giving with one hand distracted the public from what it was taking away with the other. (text/plain)
Law enforcement alone cannot overcome the international drug problem
Paola Martinez
2012-07-18 8:32 PM The World Drug Report of 2012 rightly points out that reducing the demand for the abuse of illicit and prescription drugs is more important than previously recognized in reducing the daily tragedies because of drug abuse. (text/plain)
GLP Mag-Lev Train and Floodwater to Drought Pipeline Alleviates Drought and Flooding
Green Liberty 2012 Presidential Campaign
2012-07-16 10:12 PM The Green Liberty Party (GLP) solution to seasonal flooding and drought concerns is to construct a pipeline that can regularly transport large amounts of water from flood prone regions to drought prone regions. This differs from current SNWA plans to drain northern Nevada's aquifers with a pipeline.

Naturally Occurring Misses
Sudhama Ranganathan
2012-07-07 2:01 PM When the odds are stacked against you, figuring out exactly where you stand in the place you are can be difficult to ascertain. When you face those odds alone, gauging where you are can seem doubly hard. But there are ways in almost any situation to get your bearings, and often enough it simply requires paying attention and figuring a way to focus on the larger picture. It's almost never as difficult as it initially seems, and the very things that are supposed to be making life complicated can turn out to be working more to your advantage than against you. A Conversation Worth Having
Tobias Michaels
2012-07-05 2:09 AM The Nation magazine recently held a roundtable blog discussion that debated the effects of the failed Wisconsin recall. The discussion is important because of the seriousness of its subject. Such open and frank conversations have been sadly quite rare, so it is something of a credit to the Nation that they hosted this discussion. (text/plain)

Republicrats Campaign About Jobs and Do Nothing About High Unemployment
John Leslie
2012-06-27 1:01 AM Recently, Mitt Romney made a stop on his “Jobs Tour” in upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania just outside of Philadelphia. His appearance was supposed to be, interestingly, at a local WAWA store (for those out-of-state, WAWA is a convenience store chain) Why is this interesting? Because WAWA, like so many employers these days, is a low wage, no benefit “job creator.” (text/plain)
In the End, Ed Has To Lie
Sudhama Ranganathan
2012-06-26 1:15 PM In America we like to believe the days of harassment and discrimination are over. We like to believe that since the many rulings on civil rights, things have changed and we can just let loose and allow things to progress. It is tempting to do so. After all, we have an African American president and so many point to that fact and ask if that isn't proof enough. They might say, “What happened to all that talk of hope and change? I thought this was it.” (text/html)
Paraguay: Obama's Second Latin American Coup
Shamus Cooke
2012-06-24 8:51 AM The recent coup against Paraguay's democratically elected president is not only a blow to democracy, but an attack against the working and poor population that supported and elected President Fernando Lugo, whom they see as a bulwark against the wealthy elite who've dominated the country for decades. The Affordable Care Act, Supreme Court, and Health Care as a Human Right
Mark Vorpahl
2012-06-22 3:04 AM Any day the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA). Most at risk is this act’s “individual mandate” which requires everyone to buy health insurance from a private insurer or face a steep fine. If the “individual mandate” is ruled unconstitutional, it is possible that the Supreme Court justices will throw out the ACA in its entirety. Even if they agree to keep the ACA intact while rejecting the individual mandate, this will put the entire bill in jeopardy since it is this provision that makes the ACA economically feasible. Behaving Like You've Lost Something
Sudhama Ranganathan
2012-06-19 1:02 PM This past weekend the election played out its expected drama in typical fashion for recent elections. It's typified our national elections since January of 2009. We had an issue come up over legislation that those debating it made more out of than was warranted by what was in the legislation itself – or in this case an executive order. Typical of what is being argued over, there is more media scramble, transient flash and argument than substance. That is because the debates have been over issues they don't seem really intent on doing anything about in the end. By that I mean issues both sides have had a hand in, to one extent or another, leaving voters pushed to the side for the purposes of enacting a distracting drama for yet again another year. It's like a commercial selling a product that finds itself able to deliver less and less each year. (text/html)
