2003-07-15 11:03 AM We had a post by one of our members 'dw' who posted this as a comment. I thought it was too important to leave as a comment so I'm bringing it to the front page. It seems that many of the people at the "counter demonstrators" were ex- or off-duty cops and fire officers.

Some Dare Call It Racism
ed
2003-07-15 11:03 AM Charges of environmental racism have been made against the white members of the Gulfport, Mississippi City Council. The accusation is in connection with their support of the Turkey Creek Development project which among other things will fill in 600 of the 1,800 acres of the creek to further the advancement of the Crossroads Shopping Center area for more commercial development. It will also increase the risk of flooding and have other adverse environmental consequences for those who live in the area. Mississippi Business Journal writer and Sierra Club member Becky Gillette told a Department of Environmental Quality representative that the approval of a Turkey Creek development project will make flooding worse for the low income blacks who live in the area. Gillette said, "It is my belief that result of your actions is indeed environmental racism. I also believe that if a white community had these kinds of problems, if a white church was flooding when we had a big storm, the city would be making far more efforts to help." The north Gulfport creek is where water often spills out of its banks, into nearby homes and churches.

Baton Rouge Anti-War Rally harassed
Admin
2003-07-15 11:03 AM <p>Tara writes: "I am a student in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and was hoping you could post a story for your readers concerning the events of an anti-war protest on Saturday afternoon (3/29/03 - ed.). Disc jockeys from local radio station KOOJ called upon their listeners to come and use profanity and insults against local protesters. One of the disc jockeys told the Advocate <i>"This has been going on since World War I, and it's the reason they have the right to feel the way they do. I think these son-of-a-buggers deserve a bullet in the head."</i> Here is a <a href="http://www.theadvocate.com/stories/033003/ira_protest001.shtml"> link</a> to the article." (text/html)

Report from Tent City
Liam
2003-07-15 11:03 AM I've just come from Tent City, an ongoing anti-war camp set up on the Quad of Tulane University campus. A number of local anti-war activists have set up tents here in a show of ongoing protest and solidarity. Everyone is invited to come down and hang out, and spend the night if you dare. There are eight tents up now, and more keep going up, so even if you don't have a tent you will have a place to sleep if you want to. This is by no means restricted to Tulane students, I myself neither go to Tulane nor own a tent, and I'm planning on spending the night. (text/html)
