A Streetcar Named Delayed?

2003-10-14 8:48 PM Wednesday, October 8, was the final Desire Streetcar stakeholder's meeting and the project still has one major hurdle to overcome: the train tracks by Press Street. The tracks are roughly in the middle of the proposed streetcar line, made famous in the Tennessee Williams play, which would run from Canal Street out to the Industrial Canal along Rampart Street and St. Claude avenues. Lyrical Joe and Chris Courtney organized the march to reach out to the youth in the community with a back to school celebration, and to promote community involvement in the educational system. The second line left Congo Square on Rampart Street with about two dozen revelers and activists. By the end of the march, there were almost 1000 people at St. Roch Park. (text/html)
