A Broadmoor Neighborhood Situation Report
Brian Denzer
2006-01-28 11:04 AM Almost five months after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleanians are feeling discouraged by the lack of communication between local, state, and federal officials which might provide them with direction and hope as they try to rebuild their lives. This is an update on the status of rebuilding efforts in the Broadmoor neighborhood. 56 kbps file, ~12 MB. Gross Injustice: New Orleans Gets Crumbs While Mississippi Eats Federal Cake
Cheryl Seal
2006-01-24 1:56 PM Since the Katrina disaster struck, the federal response to the disaster has been a grotesque "pantomime" of racism, incompetence, indifference to human suffering, and outrageous political favoritism. This disparity between aid to Nola and MS is one of the most glaring examples.... (text/plain + 1 comment)

The Contradictions of Black Comprador Rule:Understanding Nagin's 'Chocolate City' Remark
Jay Arena
2006-01-22 11:51 PM I argue Nagin's comments, rather than representing a real goal, reflect an attempt to manage the central contradiction of New Orleans--and by extension the U.S.’s-- post-civil rights Black political leadership: how to appear to serve the interests of the Black working class majority, while simultaneously meeting the real economic, political, and social interests of the predominately white ruling corporate elite. The Lower 9th Ward: The struggle continues
Diane Krauthamer
2006-01-21 12:53 PM Sitting right along side the Industrial Canal, the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans was the hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina and Rita, due mostly to a levee that broke. In light of hardships that thousands of residents have gone through since September, the city is now telling them that they cannot go back to their homes. Residents say such a political battle is the last thing they need, as they're struggling to reclaim their homes and their lives. (text/plain)
Heart of Darkness: Common Ground Relief in the Lower Ninth Ward
Brian Denzer
2006-01-21 10:02 AM The Lower Ninth Ward is the heart of darkness -- the most-devastated neighborhood in New Orleans. But is the true heart of darkness found in the power center of a society that continues to deny residents of the Lower Ninth Ward, and the rest of the Gulf Coast, the hope of returning to rebuild their homes and their lives? This 1/09/2006 interview with organizer Brandon Darby explores the efforts undertaken by Common Ground volunteers to provide relief to Lower Ninth Ward residents, and to help them gut and rehab their homes.
