text Interview with Kalamu ya Salaam Ytzhak 2007-05-28 9:18 PM
"The United States did not accept assistance from a number of countries including one country that offered to fly in a water purification system. The issue is the non-responsiveness of the federal government and the incompetent response on the part of state and city governments. To only look at the refusal of physicians and medical aid from Cuba is to get caught up in a kind of cold war/ideological issue that muddies the water of perceiving the depth and breadth of government failures. I don't believe the federal government was merely incompetent. I believe there was a larger plan at work, ..." (text/plain)

text Reopen Public Housing Now! Jay Arena 2007-05-25 9:17 PM
Hurricane season is here but hurricane protection, in the form of the Lafitte and other solid, brick constructed, Housing Developments, is NOT! With the start of the 2007 Hurricane Season, the reopening of public housing is more important than ever. The "bricks" have withstood several major hurricanes since their construction in the 1940s. They are safer than most of the private housing stock, and certainly safer than dangerous, tin-can, FEMA trailers. Local and state leaders, by their silence, have supported HANO and HUD’s criminal policy, and clear human rights violation, of keeping public housing closed. They--especially SENATOR MARY LANDRIEU-- even refuse to support a bill in the Senate--HR 1227--that would finance the reopening of public housing, bring our people home and provide protection for all New Orleanians. Come out June 1st and send them a message! (text/plain)

text 18 Missing Inches in New Orleans (Levees) Greg Palast/Ed Ward, MD 2007-05-01 9:21 AM
The White House had good reason, or at least political and financial reasons, to keep mum. A hurricane is an act of God, but catastrophic levee failure is an act of the Administration. Once the federal levees go, evacuation, rescue and those frightening words - responsibility and compensation - become Washington’s. Van Heerden knew that “not an act of God, but catastrophic failure of the levee system” would mean that, at least, “these people must be compensated.” (text/plain)
