Public Housing Supporters Speak Out Against Demolition
Edwin Lopez
2007-12-07 7:54 AM
The Coalition to Stop Demolition attended a City Council meeting to address their concerns regarding the projected demolition of four public housing complexes. After speaking before the Council and asking them to state their position on the matter, Coalition members staged a protest to their lack of response. In the duration of the protest a prominent local attorney was manhandled by a City official and cited for disturbing the peace.

Stop the corporate takeover of the Gulf of Mexico
Harry Bridges
2007-12-06 7:21 PM On Tuesday, December 11th from 6pm to 9pm at the Hilton New Orleans Airport, the Gulf Council Fishery Management Council will hold a public meeting on Open Ocean Aquaculture, or OOA. Environmentalists, commercial and recreational fishermen, and citizens oppose OOA because it is an unproven technology, poses unknown risks to the ocean environment and marine biodiversity, relies on heavy public subsidies and privatizes public resources for corporate profit. Attend the meeting to tell the Gulf Council NO to OOA in the Gulf. (text/plain)

2007-12-04 6:35 AM The one thing that can stop HUD's plan to demolish public housing in New Orleans beginning in mid-December is mass, determined resistance in the streets of the city to defend this precious source of affordable housing. This article addresses why the progressive community in the United States, including anti-racists, need to actively support the fight against HUD's demolition plan. The outcome of this battle will have a profound impact on the prospects for the return of the 150,000 N.O. Katrina Survivors still in exile. (text/plain)

Gary Tyler’s last chance for justice through executive clemency?
Amnesty International
2007-11-30 3:00 PM Earlier this year, a petition was filed with the Louisiana Pardon Board
requesting that Gary Tyler’s life sentence be commuted to a defined number
of years so that the outgoing state governor can authorize his release
before she leaves office in January 2008. This may be Gary Tyler’s last
chance for justice through executive clemency. (text/plain)
Two Americas….Three Decades of Injustice for Gary Tyler
Celeste Fremon
2007-11-30 2:10 PM On Wednesday night, Mitt Romney made a point of taking potshots at John Edwards for Edwards’ “two America’s” campaign theme. “We do not have two Americas,” said Romney with a self-righteous flourish.
Oh but we do. And nowhere is the schism more evident than in the U.S. criminal justice system.
In the case of Gary Tyler, 49, the division had more to do with race, than it did with class. Tyler has been in prison in the Louisiana state penitentiary at Angola for over 30 years. At age 17 he was convicted of murdering a 13-year-old white boy in the fall of 1974 in Destrehan, Louisiana, during the height of that town’s school integration crisis. Tyler is black. (text/plain)
A Plea for Compassionate Release From Prison for Gary Tyler
Debrah Constance
2007-11-30 1:50 PM
A short while back an acquaintance of mine approached me at a meeting and asked me for help on a pardon project for a prisoner. A part of me winced, "Oh, no! I don't see me getting involved in this", but I listened as he pleaded for help in the release of Gary Tyler from Angola prison in Louisiana. He was looking for employment for Gary Tyler in hospice care IF Gary Tyler could get through the pardon hearing that he had been granted a right to. (text/plain)
Urge Governor Blanco to Pardon Gary Tyler
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
2007-11-30 6:46 AM Urge Governor Kathleen Blanco to ensure that Tyler gets a new pardon board hearing, and then pardon Tyler before she leaves office in January
Gary Tyler, an African-American man, is currently serving a life sentence without chance of parole for the 1974 murder of a 13-year-old white student. Although he was only 16 at the time of the incident, Tyler was charged as an adult in a trial that was seriously flawed. Despite a climate of extreme racial tension in the town of Destrehan, Louisiana, there was no change of venue for the trial. In addition, the jury was all white; members of the black community were deliberately excluded. Tyler's defense attorney did not interview any witnesses, failed to prepare for trial, and spent only one hour with Tyler throughout the entire year previous to the trial. Furthermore, since the trial, key prosecution witnesses have recanted their testimony.
