Community Mobilizes Against Police Murder of Adolph Grimes
Darwin
2009-01-08 6:02 PM
Community leaders gathered outside the police station today say Grimes was straight up murdered and that a full investigation can only be the beginning of bringing his killers to justice. The immediate police response to today's protest was to send out multiple plain-clothes officers to observe the demonstration. One undercover officer in dark glasses and a ball cap filmed the scene, recording the identities of those present. At one point there were six plain-clothes NOPD officers on Rampart Street observing the protest, one officer for every four protestors. Such responses to even the most peaceable of gatherings serves to intimidate and scare off otherwise aggrieved community members who fear police will target them if they are filmed at a rally. To lift her out of her grief, she painted a work of love in dedication to her son David, making her home a beautiful expression of the love she felt for him." According to the Times Picayune, the City of New Orleans is now threatening to remove a portion of this memorial to David which is painted on the sidewalk in front of the home, just steps from where David was murdered. United For Peace will be creating artwork for a fundraiser to build a center for mothers and families of those lost to tragic violence. (image/jpeg)
